A significant increase in arrests of young British nationals for drug smuggling has been reported. The number of such cases rose sharply between 2023 and 2025. Figures show a substantial rise from 80 cases in 2023 to 340 in 2025. This year, 160 cases have been recorded so far.

Many of these arrests involve individuals detained for smuggling cannabis, with a notable number of cases originating from Thailand. A large proportion of those detained are young, with 60% of them aged 16 to 30.
